PRIVATE SUITE
The Gatehouse is a luxurious stay... everything has been thought of!
As part of a castle complex, this gatehouse, translated into modern architecture, is unique in its kind
We warmly welcome you to the hospitable, beautiful and culinary Limburg
The gatehouse
"A gatehouse is a structure that serves to control the inflow and outflow of people, goods and animals from a certain area" source: Wikipedia

"Het Poortgebouw" is an architect-designed Private Suite in Gronsveld.
With the beautiful hilly countryside and Maastricht nearby, this is the ideal place to enjoy and be active.
This luxurious Private Suite is an experience, not only because of the attention to detail, but certainly also because of the surroundings and the extras we have to offer.
"Het Poortgebouw" is part of a historic castle complex with a gardener's house, castle, the original gatehouse and our own home "het koetshuis" (the coach house).
The garage extension was designed as a subtle "gatehouse," inspired by the historical tradition of country estates, where gatehouses marked the transition between public access roads and the estate's enclosed courtyard or garden. This concept has been reinterpreted in a contemporary form: sleek, functional, and light in appearance, yet robust, fitting the current era while respecting the historical context of the national monument.
The chosen materials, primarily natural slate, create a clear connection with the national monument's main building, despite its modern appearance. A further enhancement is that the existing castle wall at street level has been fully integrated into the design and thus remained untouched.
Indoors and outdoors
This architect-designed Private Suite is primarily designed to provide guests with a perfect stay!
Everything in this space has been carefully conceived and executed, naturally with the aim of ensuring you have a pleasant stay, but certainly also to inspire you.
The Private Suite is very luxuriously finished and equipped with all possible amenities.
With an eye for detail, everything about this “gatehouse” has been carefully designed.
Of course, we've never lost sight of the fact that a stay is about a general feeling, a moment to truly get away and enjoy...
But through the design, amenities and attention to the little things, we have designed a place that inspires and provokes reactions, a place where you will be happy to return after a walk, bike ride or evening out.
"Upon arrival you will find a drink and a snack waiting for you, as well as your own "Gatehouse - Magazine".
In this Magazine you will find everything to make your stay unforgettable:
Information about the area, restaurants, cycling and walking routes, but also practical information about everything related to this Private Suite.
The table of contents and index is simply your guide to everything you want to know."
The gatehouse is equipped with a well-considered selection of facilities and products

To sleep
The sleeping area is part of the entire space, but can be clearly and attractively closed off by means of semi-transparent curtains.
Direct access to the bathroom and a TV at the foot of the bed complete the picture.
The interior
Everything in this space has been carefully conceived and executed, naturally with the aim of ensuring you have a pleasant stay, but certainly also to inspire you.
The "Gatehouse" was designed within the constraints of what was feasible, as obtaining a permit for this building was not a given given its national monument status.
The result is a space of 40 m2 and a storage room of 10 m2 where many beautiful windows give the whole a spacious and open feeling.
The private outdoor area is large with many trees and therefore shade in the summer.
A spacious terrace of 40 m2 is equipped with a large dining table, chairs, a BBQ and atmospheric lighting.
The bathroom is luxuriously finished with a lovely large rain shower and separate toilet.
Underfloor heating and air conditioning provide an indoor climate that can be adjusted to your preference.
The B&B is very luxuriously finished and equipped with all possible amenities.

Mountain bikers and gravel riders in particular will find what they're looking for here; a bike stand, a wash-down facility, and a comprehensive toolbox are all available.
Unlimited Wi-Fi, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a Rocket espresso machine, and an extensive minibar selection with premium products are just some of what you'll find here.
We only provide breakfast upon request, and of course it is a breakfast you will never forget, made with what I consider to be the best regional products.
Upon arrival, we recommend that you wait a while before unloading your bags and suitcases.
Enter through the sturdy and high entrance from outside (keyless entry) and step inside to take in the space.

Entree
The front is a well-balanced mix of old and new.
The new Gatehouse literally floats above the national monument castle wall.
The diamond garden is located two metres above street level, under the trees.
The exterior
The Gatehouse is an architecturally designed modern translation of an old gatehouse.
"The Gatehouse" is part of a historic castle complex with a gardener's house, castle, the original gatehouse, and our own home, "the coach house."
The extension and renovation of the existing garage was designed as a subtle 'gatehouse', inspired by the historical tradition of country estates, where gatehouses marked the transition between public access roads and the estate's enclosed courtyard or garden.
This concept is reinterpreted in a contemporary form: sleek, functional and light in appearance, yet robust, fitting with the current era, and with respect for the historical context of the national monument "coach house".
The chosen materials, particularly the natural slates in rust-colored hues, create a clear connection with the national monument's main building, despite its modern appearance. A further enhancement is that the existing castle wall at street level has been fully integrated into the design and thus remained untouched.
The outdoor area at this property has also been carefully designed; a spacious terrace with well-placed lighting creates an intimate, magical atmosphere, especially under the beautiful trees.
The very minimalist sliding doors ensure a clear contact with the outside world as soon as you enter the Poortgebouw.

Culinary and Cultural Maastricht
Cultural, artisanal and culinary delights... all to be found in hospitable Maastricht
The environment
The Poortgebouw is located in the beautiful little village of Gronsveld, not far from Maastricht and within walking distance of forests and the Limburg hills.
Mountain biking, gravel riding, hiking and of course cycling starts as soon as the gate opens.
Many well-known and lesser-known sporting events can be found nearby, such as MH2D, Hammerstone, the Amstel Gold Race, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and more.
With the culinary, cultural and hospitable Maastricht a short distance away and villages such as Mechelen, Vijlen and Gulpen nearby, there is much to enjoy.
Delicious food, terraces, shopping, unique architecture and charming streets, it's all there.
Small craft producers are still tangibly present in the villages and can often be visited.
Due to climate change, the Limburg landscape and its unique location have proven very suitable for wine grapes. Here and there you'll find wine estates where you can enjoy a tasting or tour.
Cities such as Liège and Aachen are also within easy reach.
Mountain biking, gravel and road cycling
There are plenty of opportunities for mountain biking, gravel riding, and road cycling just a short distance away. From "het Poortgebouw" (the gatehouse), you can explore the rolling hills, but cycling towards the Voerstreek, the Hoge Kempen region, or the technical mountain bike trail on Sint Pietersberg is also fantastic.
My great passion and hobby is and remains mountain biking!
I have been mountain biking since I was 16 and have now become a seasoned XC ultra marathon biker.
My heart lies in riding extreme challenges, multi-day tours and ultra distances.
In recent years I have cycled multi-day tours in the Apennines, Ardennes, Morocco, South Africa and Chile
My training schedules give me the necessary structure to peak at the right times and train for a specific event.
But I am often available for a round in between.
Feel free to ask, I might join you for a ride.
I know all the official and unofficial routes in the area, and have therefore collected a number of routes that can be ridden for all different fitness and skill levels.
With a QR code you can transfer them to your bike computer.
Please note: deviating from the official routes is at your own risk and requires extra attention from hikers.

Culinarily speaking, you'll be enjoying yourself here with a capital "E"!
Here you grow up with the idea that "everything can be different and better".
We are spoiled with an environment full of culinary delights.

If you'd like to cook for yourself or create a delicious lunch platter, there are countless producers of truly delicious products: a syrup distiller, the best bakers in the Netherlands, and shops specializing in all the local delicacies.
You'll also find the culinary vibe of Limburg in "het Poortgebouw"; we have a minibar with exceptional and carefully selected delicacies ready for you, but it doesn't stop there...
The welcome drink and snacks on arrival reinforce the feeling of having landed in a culinary region.
We have designed a package with the world-famous TEFAF and a reservation at restaurant 172 Brut as a theme: TEFAF stay with a guaranteed table at 172 Brut
Thanks to our local roots and personal relationships, we can reserve a table for our guests at restaurant 172 Brut — even during the busiest TEFAF days.
