About the Gatehouse

This Private Suite is called “the gatehouse” and for good reason;

Our nearby home is a coach house dating from 1862 and is part of a historic castle complex. Originally, this house was part of a large plot that included not only the castle, but also a gardener's house, a coach house, and a gatehouse.

The original gatehouse is located on the highway - in the heart of Gronsveld - approximately 200 meters from the coach house.

In the 1960s, the coach house was converted into a residential building, and the entrance on Stationsstraat was built into the original castle wall.

In 1968, a garage was immediately added here on the site where we now have the “Gatehouse - Private Suite” built.

When applying for the permit for this "Gatehouse - Private Suite," we described the plan as a second gatehouse. This time, it wouldn't lead to the castle, but to our house, "the coach house."

The garage extension was designed as a subtle "gatehouse," inspired by the historical tradition of country estates, where gatehouses marked the transition between public access roads and the estate's enclosed courtyard or garden. This concept is reinterpreted here in a contemporary form: sleek, functional, and light in appearance, yet robust, fitting the current era while respecting the historical context of the national monument.

The chosen materials, primarily natural slate, create a clear connection with the national monument's main building, despite its modern appearance. A further enhancement is that the existing castle wall at street level has been fully integrated into the design and thus remained untouched.

The “Gatehouse - Private Suite” will be a reality from the end of 2026.
